Construction is all about problem-solving. Most problems are just part of the building process and have a low risk of conflict. Others walk a fine line between timely "solvability" and a lawsuit-in-waiting. Regardless of their nature, we believe it is paramount to proactively attack and solve problems while they are still just problems. And, for better or worse, we actually enjoy that challenge.

Construction issues usually involve such a "Rubik's Cube" of dimensions that the challenge of meeting
and exceeding individual and project objectives is incredibly compelling. We like what we do, and in the doing, are particularly influenced by Albert Einstein's 3 Rules of Work:

  • Out of clutter — find simplicity.
  • From discord — find harmony.
  • In the middle of difficulty — lies opportunity.
For over 35 years, Mike McCormick has worked with commercial real estate development and construction issues and, since 1987, the major portion of that work has been with sports facilities at the major league and collegiate levels. Our unique background in law, engineering, construction, finance, operations, and executive level management provides us with a base of comprehensive knowledge and practical experience that is as distinctive as the buildings we work on.

As Executive Director of the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority (Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums) from 1987-90, and again as project manager and acting Executive Director from 2001 to 2005, Mike’s duties and responsibilities were wide-ranging. In addition to both administrative and field management of all construction and capital improvements, he also served as one of the lead negotiators of leases with the Royals and Chiefs (1990 & 2002-04), and managed the generation of two land use plans—the second of which involved a collaboration of leading Kansas City sports architects in a retail/commercial makeover and redevelopment of the Sports Complex.

Since 1990, Mike has served as consultant and legal counsel to the Stadium Managers Association, a professional organization of major football, baseball and soccer stadiums around the world, and has worked on over a dozen other sports facility projects spanning a wide spectrum of tasks. Mike has also addressed national organizations such as the International City Managers Association, the Baseball Winter Meetings, and the National Institute of Municipal Legal Officers on such topics as “Current Trends in Professional Sports Leases” and “Negotiating Stadium Leases - Long Term Capital Improvements”. Locally, he has made presentations to the Missouri Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program on “Paying Taxes For the Sport of It” and “Economic Impacts of Cultural and Sporting Events”.

Of course, technology is everywhere, but nowhere is it more valuable and ubiquitous than in the construction industry. From simple email to the sophisticated processes of Building Information Modeling, the quality and manner of construction delivery is changing for the better.

From the Neutral's standpoint, these innovations make the monitoring of documents and activities far more complete and far less intrusive. In addition, the use of web and video conferencing can significantly decrease travel expense to meetings and job sites while at the same time increasing the level of personal communication and "feel" for the project.

One of our ongoing objectives is to not just keep up with technology, but to be familiar with the cutting edges as well. It helps us do our job better and more reliably, it enhances everyone's efficiency, and it saves clients and projects real money.
